This past Halloween weekend comic book superheroes, anime stars, and video game characters joined the parade of monsters already invading Los Angeles. No, it wasn’t the real life Pixels movie come to life but rather the return of Stan Lee’s Comikaze! The annual extravaganza, which drew more than 75,000 people to the L.A. Convention Center, is a celebration of comics, gaming, and all things geek.
This year’s highlights included the legendry comic book creator himself, Stan Lee, as well as a wide range of artists and luminaries including Mistress of the Dark, Elvira; Star Wars’ Princess Leia; and Spawn creator Todd Mcfarlane. But that doesn’t even begin to tell the story as more than one hundred special guests attended, more panels than you could possibly participate in (unless you’re Hermione in the Prisoner of Azkaban) were presented, and a Yu-Gi-Oh game competition was hosted. Long gone are the days where these conventions were primarily for fans looking to buy/trade comics and hard to find related wares. Nowadays you can see/get anything from a real world R2D2 to being outfitted in your very own super hero costume. As with any good con there were events catered to everyone, including: children, singles, fashionistas, and even those looking for something risqué. And did I mention costumes? Oh, there were plenty!
From old school
to new school
all was on display. How these people come up with the creativity and design of their costumes is beyond me but I will always admire.
Here’s to hoping next year is event greater!
