DWNTWN is a local indie synth-pop band that has been gaining notoriety each passing day as they continue to impress with their explosive sound that invites the listener to bust a few moves on the dance floor. With comparisons to Crystal Castles and Beach House, this band has been making waves since the release of their self-titled EP in 2014. At Hollywood’s Bardot club, an appropriate intimate location for their record release party, DWNTWN had all the right moves to make the crowd fall in love with their electro-pop all over again.
Lead vocalist Jamie Leffler appeared before the cozy room in a long elegant white gown with her digi-pad table affixed with light bulbs. She was cool, calm and collected as she catapulted into the hit single “Bloodshot Eyes.” Guitarist Robert Cepeda wailed on the guitar while drummer Jerrod Bettis kept the dancing beat steady throughout the set. The live tracks captured a much rawer version from her album that had the fans swooning over DWNTWN. Songs like “Fourteen” echoed between the empty spaces of the room as ripples of sound waves overtook the stage. There is pain and heartbreak in her lyrics that exposes a serious but genuine side to this artist, making their sound much more ethereal.
Even with a shorter set of newer material, DWNTWN conquered the Hollywood night with their engaging pop that makes instant fans at first listen. Their upcoming album Racing Time is due out this July and already receiving accolades for their gravitational pull and dynamic sound.
