Coming from the land down under, Jen Cloher is the Australian rock queen who has been in the trenches for some time now making steps towards global domination. Her latest self-titled album was release last August on Milk! Records and has all the critics raving the maturity on her progression as an important character in the rock scene. The life partner of fellow Aussie Courtney Barnett, the two play on each other’s albums and bands and are a duo not to be reckoned with. At The Echo, Barnett joined Cloher on stage to provide the raucous guitar shredding she is known for. It was a special treat for the Los Angeles crowd looking for something special, something worthwhile that captured the essence of a great rock show.
Opening the show was fellow Australian rock star Mia Dyson, who held her own with the delivery of spontaneous rock ballads that were both catchy and monumental. Raised on bluesy rock music like Bob Dylan and Bonny Raitt, Dyson’s striking of the strings was unforgettable as she hammered out the notes on her latest single, “Tearing Up The Lawn.” She is currently on tour with Jen Cloher and will be joining The Psychedelic Furs in March for several dates on the west coast.
Ready to transcend space and time, Jen Cloher made her way to the stage with her band and was ready to pummel the Angelinos into submission with her glorious tunes that are a testament for female-led musicians changing the scenery in the landscape of the traditional ‘chick rock’. She opened with the magnanimous track “Regional Echo,” which captured the moment as the song eclipsed the melodrama and idealism in her words, “I’m never gonna dream of things that just can’t be done.” With Barnett by her side, the two riffed back and forth like a tennis match on the high notes on “Shoegazers” and “Analysis Paralysis.”
With their first ever band appearance in Los Angeles, it was truly a historical moment for the fans in attendance. Nothing will come close to the one-of-a-kind experience shared by Jen Cloher and her wonderfully talented band. Her latest self-titled album is out now and the ensuing tour will hit the east coast and Europe for her winter tour. Do not miss this show.
