Coming from Seattle, Mike Hadreas found music as an outlet for his personal struggle living in an intolerant town that judged his alternative lifestyle. Writing about subject matter and emotions that includes sexuality, domestic abuse and suicide, Hadreas’ music is prolific and takes from his past to build towards an optimistic future. At his first L.A. show at the fabulous El Rey Theatre, Mike Hadreas gave everything to the fans and is on track to becoming one of the most sought after pop artists. With opener Serpentwithfeet taking the crowd into an inviting and unknown realm of hybrid-pop, the fans were ready for the magic of Perfume Genius.
As Hadreas took the stage, the fans were ready to receive the positive vibes from the dynamic artist. The show opened the set with an elegant piano embrace from “Otherside” as he serenaded the crowd just before kicking it up a notch as the song exploded into a burst of energy. Mike Hadreas exuded brutal honesty during the set similar to the raw talent from one of his idols, PJ Harvey. Hadreas’ music shined throughout the room as he commanded the stage as he alternated between romantic lullabies on the keyboard to tackling the deep notes on “Slip Away.” The message in the music gets across to audiences who accept the unique music this incredible artist creates. Perfume Genius is currently on tour in Europe with a few U.S. dates this fall. His latest album No Shape is out on Matador Records.
