Every October fans of the ghoulish variety get to spend the month preparing and plotting for the one holiday that brings out the darkness in all of us…Halloween! But the day after, as the moonlight fades and the monsters return to their lairs, we all get a little sad knowing that our next celebration is so far away. Fortunately, the good people of ScareLA share that sentiment and decided to add a little bump in the night chills to the glorious Southern California summer. The event, hosted this weekend (August 8 and 9) at the Pasadena Convention Center, is an opportunity for fans of witches, ghosts, and all things sinister to come together and rejoice in that one holiday we just can’t enough of. This year expect to find an expanded showroom housing more of everything that fans went so crazy for last time including: theater with a macabre sensibility; preview haunts of what’s in store in two short months; and workshops from makeup and prosthetics to trick-or-treating like a badass. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?!
When I attended last year I was shocked and thoroughly impressed at the level of creativity and devotion to the Halloween experience. It was as if a necromancer conjured up a tent city out of thin air; replete with bazaar, performers, and creatures fit only for nightmares. But what I remembered most was the exuberance of the people that attended this fantastic event. Every booth I walked past, every class I attended, and every person I came across was overjoyed in their excitement.
The event however, is more than just a place for lost souls to gather and mingle; it’s a harbinger of things to come as Universal Studios, The Queen Mary, and Knott’s Berry Farm all use it as a platform to launch their respective Halloween experiences: Horror Nights, Dark Harbor, and Knott’s Scary Farm. Last year Universal brought out horror aficionado and acclaimed director, John Landis, to promote the opening of its “American Werewolf in London” themed haunt, to which the crowd went nuts.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! This year’s highlights are sure to include all the above as well as Serial Killer Speed Dating, The Bloody Ballroom Party, and an attempt to break a Guinness World Record…hint, it involves candy. It is downright evil with how much ScareLA is able to get away with! And if you’re concerned about it being too much for the little ones, don’t be, this really is a family friendly event…at least for the sinister ones.
