San Francisco natives, the Fresh & Onlys, made a pit stop at L.A.’s Resident near downtown to say ‘hello’ and rock the locals into submission. The colorful psyche-rock outfit led by singer and song writer Tim Cohen douses fans with flairs of southern rock influences with dreary tones of Joy Division and the peppy melodrama of The Cure. The group release their first self-titled album in 2008 and have been evolving their sound to hone in on their brand of pop, garage-rock and indie-psyche. With the recent release of their latest album, Wolf Lie Down, the Fresh & Onlys offers a healthy mix of jangly rock with serious overtures, all while keeping the elements of garage rock in their back pocket at every turn.
The L.A. crowd at the Resident was at the right place, at the right time for a collection of special guests. Openers Earth Girl Helen Brown and Lars Finberg coveted the psychedelic and post punk sounds that served as a teaser for the headliner. Earth Girl Helen Brown’s drastic cosmic rock included a saxophonist and a 10 minute track that left the crowd stunned. The short but sweet set list segued into multi-instrumentalist, Lars Finberg. With credits in bands like The Oh Sees, A-Frames and The Intelligence, Finberg has an affinity for writing short and to-the-point punk songs that are as catchy as they are fatal. The gargantuan sounds of the openers lead way athe flawless set from the Fresh & Onlys.
Coming up on nearly ten years of rocking out in the underbelly of San Francisco, the seventh album is the most critical for this band. They exhausted the L.A. crowd and rarely paused to capture their collective breaths. The assault of post-new wave tracks “Impossible Man” and “Foolish Person” had the packed room dancing along to the hypnotic and euphoric riffs as they effortlessly manhandled their instruments. The foursome could barely contain themselves on the stage as they did their best not to dive into the front row and join the exhilarated fans. The Fresh & Onlys recently released their latest album, Wolf Lie Down, and will be hitting European dates this fall. Do not miss this extraordinary band when they play at a town near you.
